Union Leader And Facebook Comments On Bank Strike

Circular No.5/VI/2014
February 11, 2014

To:
ALL UNITS / STATE COMMITTEES

Dear comrades,
Congrats !  Bankmen!!
You have made it
The strike of 48 hours,  a resounding success

In the background of the 8th round of wage talks inching from 9.5% to 10% against the UFBU expectation of substantial increase necessitated to reply their rigid action on 27th JANUARY 2014 on the negotiation table, by serving 48 hours strike notice.

Reports are flowing uninterruptedly from the all over the country about the successful observance of strike call, as the entire workforce have felt the insult inflicted by IBA, who have failed to live upto the expressions made by IBA Chairman in the first round of discussions held on 22.02.2013 that the settlement would be concluded on 14th August 2013 with the reasonable, respectable and comparable wage revision compared with external factors.

Having earned a gross profit of Rs.1,12,290 crores [2011-12], the offer of IBA is too meagre as against the UFBU’s minimum demand of 30% on payslip components, submitted with sufficient details to IBA.  In the CLC[C] discussions at Delhi on 6th February 2014 too, the approach of IBA was too rigid.

Adding fuel to fire, the statement of Hon’ble Finance Minister in the meeting at Delhi yesterday, painted a picture that the entire profit earned are to be set apart for the wage increase for the Bankmen.  The expressions of the FM is really unfortunate and a provocative one.

If the Government and Banker set apart of 10% of the gross profit earned as at 31.03.2012, towards payslip components that step will be appreciated.  If the four defaulters of the country [ie] Kingfisher Airline Rs.2673 crores, Winsome Diamond and Jewellery Co., Ltd., Rs.2660 crores,Electrotherm India Ltd., Rs.2211 crores and Zoom Developers P Ltd., Rs.1810 crores amounting Rs.9354  crores would also suffice the minimum demand of the entire Banking workforce.

As per the practice, UFBU is to take call on the developments in toto and expected to chalk out the further agitational programmes of higher form.

Bankmen! You have done it !!
AIBOA shall live upto the expectation along with other Unions
In the Banking Industry.

With warmest greetings of the struggle.

Yours comradely,

 /S.NAGARAJAN/

Meanwhile, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) general secretary and CPI MP Gurudas Das Gupta hit out at Finance Minister P. Chidambaram for stating that banks profits could not be used only to enhance salaries (of their employees) as they must be invested into expansions. Mr. Gupta wondered how the banks, which refuse higher wages to its employees, waived bad loans of big corporates causing severe loss to the banks. While the NPAs of big corporates were ignored or waived, the small defaulters were made to suffer with punitive action, he charged.

Yesterday night I saw a debate on PTC news (for the last five minutes after seeing an updation by my friend). The debate was not about wage revision but whether the strike should be done or not. I was not aware who the guest leaders were but they were not able to put our point of view rightly. Few points which were raised were:

1. When salary of Bank and Other Govt Service was put forward, the host said the salary of the bank employee is not less and there is lots of unemployment in the country. He said that a salary of Rs 8000 is sufficient for working in banks. My take is that we are ready to work at even Rs 8000, but let other govt department also give only that much salary to their employee so that the purchasing power of the all will be same. Yes I dont know how I will survive with those Rs 8000 in this age.

2. The host concluded with the word that bank employee should not adopt such pressure tactic as it is only hardship on common people. Our so called leaders present dint said a single word on that. My take is that our wage revision is overdue since Nov 2012 and we are doing strike only after 15 months. For other govt departments 7th pay commission has been commissioned which is due from 2016 and still two years are left. We are also doing job which is much more accountable. Our wage revision is due since Nov 2012, and with the current situation I do not see it happening before the General Election. After so much delay, we are blamed for adopting pressure tactic. "SHAME ON US"

3. One of the guest said that we are giving hardship to common people for mere five to ten thousand increase and "Parmatma aise paise se santusti nahi dega". GOD such a peculiar person he was. I bet him that go to any department for your work and the work will not be done even on four to five attempts but come to bank, even a peculiar work (as it takes lots of decision making) like taking a loan will be done in only one visit. My one friend rightly quoted that A/C opening and making driving license is work of same category as both is a person right to obtain, anyone can easily judge the time taken by these two thing the service provided by us and others. Anyways banks has so many Alternative Delivery Channels that their was no hardship on common man. No one was cash short thanks to ATM, Internet Banking, Debit Cards, etc.

I missed whole debate but with these three points were so disheartening for me that I was not able to sleep soundly throughout the night and ponder on the social status of "WE BANKERS"

Statement of our finance minister shri chidambaram is quite pathetic over All over india bank's strike. he told that he could not distribute all the profits in wages/ salary.
my dear finance minister, kindly answer my undernoted questions.
1) how are you paying salary to the workers/ employee of loss making PSUs?
2) why you are discriminating between central govt employees and bank employees?
3) for consecutive years railways is in loss. then why apart from handsome salary ,the railways employees are getting bonus every year?
4) why the salary of MPs and MLAs have been raised to 80000/- pm when most of their expenses are free of cost?
5)tell me one PSU / govt office where working environment is more hectic than banking?
