Bank Staff Beaten Up

Anup Goswami Post On Facebook____________________

The most unfortunate event happened, when a junior Clerk got brutally beaten up by the customers in State Bank of India, Metiaburuz Branch, Kolkata, on last Thursday. The concerned staff member got severely injured and was threatened for his life by the alleged customers.

As per information, the concerned teller had refused to make payments to the customers in the que after 4PM as per the Guidelines provided in ‘RBI Master Circular on Customer Service’ (Para 7) and ‘NI Act, 1881’, (Section 65 and Section 10). Inspite of repeated request for intervention the branch manager refrained himself from making any official order for the extension of banking hours and continuation of the teller counter.

Attacked by the Customers, he took shelter in the Branch System Room, where the Customers also hurled in and beat him up seriously. The whole incident got recorded in the CCTV footage. When the customers were asked that who have given them the permission to enter the system room, they replied that it is the Branch Manager who has given them the permission to enter the system room and force him to sit in the Cash Counter and give service. Some customers took the photograph of the concerned victim in their mobile phone camera and said him, “Tu woh green bike pe aata hain na….?? Tu aa…!! Tu aa…. Fir tujhe dakhte hain…!”

So far no FIR or even a General Diary has been lodged against the culprits and no news of any Punishment of the concerned Branch Manager has come up. Neither the concerned victimized employee has been transferred to a safe place nor has the Bank arranged any security provision for him.

Now the incident points out some serious questions very clearly:

1. What refrained the Branch Manager from ordering extension in service and thereby allowing Overtime to the concerned employee if required when the condition was so severe to control the situation?

2. Does the amount of money saved on that day by not making an office order to avoid any claim for Overtime is more than the cost of a person’s life?

3. Had there been an Armed Guard posted in that branch, would the culprits dared to react the same? Wouldn’t it have acted like a protective shield in front of the staff member?

4. Today Bank is gradually removing guards from the Branches by insurance. But how is the Bank ensuring the safety and protection of the employees?

It is really a matter of shame for both the Bank management and the Government that they are failing to give protection to the persons whom they engage into Essential Services like Banking. Bank should immediately close down such branches where they fail to give the minimum protection to its employees. And the most shameful thing in the whole issue is that the same media that advocates on interruption in customer service and thereby public harassment when we go for strike are remaining mum. Corporates and Fund Houses of the Political Parties that forces the Government against 5 Day Banking for their own benefits that they gets from us, are silent as well. The Human Rights Commission probably thinks that we are not humans and hence have not shown any botheration.

How long this victimization of the Bank workers will continue?

Sir,
CONTINUOUS ATTACKS ON BANK OFFICERS

You will agree that the bank officers’ community comes to serve all the classes of the society and reaching out to each and every individual irrespective of Caste Creed or Race. The State Government has also understood the service being done by the Banks and thus most of the developmental schemes are being carried out through banks.

Despite rendering such an selfless service to all sections of society the bank officers are being subjected to harassment and dangers to their life. In a recent case one of our Managers Sri Ram Nath Thakur posted at branch Katuvanalal under Zonal Office Gonda was shot dead while on duty . The police is still firing shots in the wilderness and till now nothing has come out of the investigation and the perpetrators of the crime are still at large, while the life of his wife and two minor children has been ruined beyond repair forever.
While we do not wish to make any comments on the general law and order situation of the State but certainly as the custodian of the expectations and hopes of the people of the nation we expect you( as very young C.M.) to ensure that the bankers may work in peace and with safety so that they can participate in the economical developmental process of the state as expected from them.

It will not be out of place to mention that we cannot be mute spectators of the butchering of our brothers and carry the onus of developmental schemes of the state while having a fear of safety of our lives.

Accordingly once again I request you to instruct the authorities concerned to bolster the security of the bank officials and deal with the cases related to the safety of bakers with extreme caution.

At the same time we also demand immediate action against the miscreant responsible for the untimely and sad death of our comrade R N Thakur failing which the banker’s community shall be left with very little option other than taking proper recourses which includes complete STRIKE. With regards

Yours faithfully,

R.N.SHUKLA
State Secretary
