CBI busts racket involved in fraudulent recruitment in PSU Banks

PATNA: The CBI on Monday busted a man-wife gang allegedly involved in a racket of getting people appointed as clerks and probationary officers (POs) in nationalized banks. Alisha Verma, a PO in Biharsharif branch of UCO bank, has been arrested but her husband, Sanjeev Kumar of Telehra, Ekangarsarai, was absconding. Sanjeev is employed as a peon in the block education resource centre at Ekangarsarai (Nalanda district).

One Rohan Kumar, who was to appear at a bank exam for another candidate, was also arrested from Noida. He was a dummy to write an online bank recruitment examination to be conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection ( IBPS). The gang's network is spread all over of the country, especially in Nasik, Noida and Greater Noida. They would charge between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 18 lakh from each candidate for recruitment as POs and Rs 7 lakh for clerks, said V K Singh, DIG (CBI). Scholars (dummy candidates) were provided with air tickets to fly to the exam centres in different parts of the country, Singh added.

According to the DIG, Sanjeev, his wife Alisha, Rajesh Kumar, Alisha's cousin, and Kishlaya Kumar, all from Biharsharif area, were fraudulently managing to get undeserving candidates qualify at various competitive examinations conducted for government jobs. Alisha also got the PO job through the same modus operandi, Singh claimed.

Explaining the modus operandi of the gang, he said the gang members scanned and edited the photographs of dummy candidates in such a way that it was difficult to detect the impersonator who also used to carry fake ID cards.

The DIG said after scrutinizing the couple's call details, the CBI is likely to bust more such gangs operating from Bihar.

It is a very shocking and sad news. Lacs of candidates work hard for months (at times, for years) to get a government job in banks, but, news like this shatter the faith of a common man in the system. BankersAdda condemns such fraudulent activities and will request government to be more vigilant regarding such loopholes in the recruitment process and ensure harshest punishment for the people found guilty.

CBI exposes recruitment scam in IOB

 The Central Bureau of Investigation has exposed major irregularities in the recruitment of sweepers/messengers in Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) headquartered in Chennai. Based on a specific input that many candidates managed to get appointment using fake certificates, the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch here registered a case and conducted searches on the bank’s establishments in different parts of Tamil Nadu last week, agency sources said on Wednesday.

The allegation is that the services of 951 persons working as daily-wage labourers in the bank for several years were regularised in 2010.

The educational qualification for the post of sweeper/messenger was a fail in the SSLC examination. However, many applicants who had actually passed the SSLC or Plus-Two examinations produced fake certificates claiming that they had failed in Standard X.

Suspended

A top office-bearer of IOB’s employees union was placed under suspension after he was named in the scam.

Preliminary enquiries revealed that many daily-wage workers had managed to get the appointment with the assistance of some union leaders, the sources said.

When contacted IOB Chairman and Managing Director M. Narendra said the bank had conducted an enquiry into the charges. About 60 employees who were found ineligible were terminated from service.

Since they had submitted fake certificates, the bank had given a complaint against them with the local police.

According to IOB General Manager (Human Resources) Indira Padmini, a few office-bearers of employees’ union who were allegedly involved in the irregularities were placed under suspension. However, they were reinstated later without prejudice to the process of enquiry and chargesheet.
“A report has been sent to the bank’s Vigilance Organisation in this regard. All documents pertaining to the recruitment have been shared with the CBI to facilitate their investigation. We are also conducting an in-depth enquiry into the matter,” Ms. Padmini said.
