Missed call banking is convenient for basic banking activities

Missed calls have a language of their own—I am at the gate, come down; reached home safe; call me back when you can; call me, no balance left; and lots more. In fact, missed calls are a business solution now; even banks are using this option.
What is it?
Missed call banking facility, as the name suggests, provides banking services if you give a missed call. These services include balance enquiry, mini statement, cheque book request, account statement request, email statement request and others. The services vary across banks.
The facility’s biggest advantage is that you can get your bank details on the phone and don’t need to use Net banking or an automated teller machine (ATM) for these. Banks including HDFC Bank Ltd, Axis Bank Ltd, ICICI Bank Ltd, Indian Bank and Syndicate Bank offer this facility.
How does it work?
First, get your mobile phone number registered with the bank if you haven’t already done so. If you have registered for SMS banking service, you can start using this service immediately. The registration process varies from bank to bank. Here’s how to register for the missed call service.
Option 1: Send an SMS with your bank details such as customer identification number from you mobile number that is registered with the bank.
Option 2: Use Net banking.
Option 3: Visit a bank branch or an ATM.
After registration, you will get a confirmation message from your bank. Once confirmed, you can start using the service. All you have to do is dial the number given from your registered phone number. Banks generally offer different numbers for different services. For instance, you will have to dial one number for balance enquiry and another one for mini statements. The call will get disconnected after the first ring, and you will receive an SMS with the information requested within 3-5 minutes.
You can get information regarding multiple accounts of the same bank. The service works on any mobile phone handset; and it is available 24 hours a day.
What should you do?
Missed call banking is convenient for basic banking activities. Banks don’t charge you for the missed calls. But since you have to first avail the SMS facility, which costs about Rs.15 per quarter, it’s not ‘free’ after all. However, there are some banks that don’t charge for the SMS that they send to you.
You don’t have to worry about any security issues or theft as there is no transaction that can happen using this service.
