Now Currency Notes AND Coins At Your Doorstep

Chillar party at your doorstep-Times of India-24.10.2013

AHMEDABAD: You won't need to stand in a long queue outside banks to exchange currency notes of big denominations now.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) van will visit your residential and business areas in the next six days, starting October 24 to provide bank notes of Rs 10 denomination. The apex bank has also decided to release fresh notes worth Rs 3,397.9 crore and coins worth Rs 14.99 crore to meet the demand this Diwali.
RBI has taken decision keeping in mind the severe shortage of Rs 10 currency notes. Last year, for the period from September 1 to October 30, fresh notes worth Rs 2,994.8 crore were remitted. For the same period this year, the sum has increased to Rs 3,397.9 crore. This amount will be released in 3,973 lakh currency notes. Similarly, 521.4 lakh coins have been remitted this year.
"Since 2012, 22 currency chests of the city are provided with coins and denominated notes worth Rs 2 crore per month. Despite this common people and businessmen have to spend two to three hours at RBI counter to collect packets of coins or currency notes of lesser value. The shortage of coins is due to lack of good distribution system and not because of less bulk," sources in RBI said.
The demand for currency notes of Rs 10, Rs 20 and Rs 50 notes in ATM machines, too, is increasing in the city.
RBI has opened 17 currency chests or bank branches in Ahmedabad to exchange soiled or mutilated notes.
"If the banks refuse to provide coins or denominated currency note packets, customers can register a complaint with RBI," a senior officer told TOI.
