Mumbai, July 29, 2012 ( News item Hindustan Times )
The anti-corruption branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday arrested a senior manager of Punjab National Bank (PNB) and an asset recovery agent for allegedly accepting a bribe to return an auctioned property. According to CBI officials, senior manager Mani Bhushan posted at the regional stationery department centre at PNB House, Fort, and an asset recovery agent HC Mendiratta had demanded a bribe of Rs2 crore and were arrested from the PNB office while accepting Rs1.8 crore.
CBI officials said that the complainant owns Meleagrina Building in Bandra that he had mortgaged with the bank in 2007 for a loan of Rs7.5 crore. The bank took possession of the property when he failed to repay part of the loan and auctioned it in 2010. The complainant himself purchased the property.
However, citing technical reasons, Mani Bhushan allegedly refused to hand over the property. The complainant approached the CBI when Mani Bhushan and Mendiratta demanded the bribe.
The CBI also found that the two accused were troubling the complainant as they wanted a construction agency to take over the property. Investigation into the role of the construction agency is underway.
The accused were produced before a special CBI court, which remanded them to CBI custody till August 3.
