JAIPUR: The ACB on Friday arrested the chief manager (civil) of State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur (SBBJ), Anant Kumar Sinha, after he was caught red-handed taking a bribe of Rs 30,000 at his office from a building contractor. The 51-year-old officer was demanding a commission for paying the contractor for the work he had carried out for the bank's building in Choda Rasta and the SBBJ employees flats in Jawahar Nagar. Raids were carried out at his residence in Nirman Nagar after his arrest.

According to additional SP Bajrang Singh who organized the trap, one Ramkumar Kumawat, a building contractor, approached ACB and lodged a complaint against Sinha. "A total of Rs 30 lakh were pending for the construction work carried out by Kumawat. To release the payment, Sinha was demanding 5 % commission from Kumawat. Sinha had taken Rs 30,000 from the contractor before the latter approached the agency," said addl SP Singh.

The ACB verified the complaint on Thursday when Sinha accepted Rs 20,000 from the contractor. "After a negotiation, Sinha agreed to accept Rs 1 lakh to release the payment of Rs 30 lakh to the contractor. As he had taken Rs 50,000 in two installments, the remaining amount was to be paid by the contractor," said the officer.

He added that Kumawat went to Sinha's office on Friday and gave him Rs 30,000. "We organized a trap and caught Sinha red-handed taking the bribe. He was arrested under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act," said the officer.

Police arrest bank robbers
GUWAHATI: City police arrested Majibur Rahman, Putul Dutta and Pranjal Nath on Thursday night in connection with a bank theft at Dispur. On February 24, a bag containing Rs 12 lakh was stolen from the Dispur branch of a public sector bank during the day.

After the bank authorities registered a case, police began investigations and nabbed the three.

"Majibur Rahman was the bank's cashier and the bag containing the money was stolen from his cabin. When we checked CCTV cameras, we found that an unidentified man had entered his chamber and picked up the bag easily despite Rahman being present," police said. Rahman joined the bank in 2001.

Investigation also revealed that Putul Dutta, who was serving as a security guard in the bank, and Pranjal Nath, a shopkeeper, were accomplices. "We are yet to recover the money and arrest the person who took the cash. We are still questioning people," an official at Dispur police station
